What is an M&A Strategy?

An M&A Strategy is a framework that definitively specifies and sets out the criteria, characteristics or requirements that any potential acquisition target must possess in order for an organisation to achieve its corporate strategy via the acquisitions it intends to undertake.

Corporate growth is essentially achieved in three primary ways: organic growth, acquisitive growth or a combination of the two, which is the most common. And while most organisations rely on a corporate strategy to assist them in their organic growth, very few have developed an acquisition strategy to assist them in their acquisitive growth.

The disconnect that organisations perceive to exist between their corporate strategy (organic growth) and their acquisition strategy (acquisitive growth) may well be the reason for this as they are seen as two separate growth mechanisms with no overlap.

The reality is that any acquisition undertaken to achieve acquisitive growth, will eventually become a source of organic growth. This is effectively the link between corporate and acquisitive strategy.

An acquisitive strategy therefore, can be viewed as an extension of a company’s corporate strategy, which must translate into a set of criteria that must be met by any potential acquisition target.

Once an organisation has developed its M&A strategy, it is imperative that this strategy is implemented in order to achieve its long term objectives. This entails identifying acquisition targets which comply with the stated objectives of the M&A strategy. Merchantec Capital has strong origination capabilities.
